NEED IMMEDIATE HELP IN AN EMERGENCY?

Call 911 and Talk to Police

If you or a loved one is in immediate danger, calling 911 and talking with police may be necessary. It is important to notify the operator that it is a mental health emergency and ask for police officers trained in crisis intervention or trained to assist people experiencing a psychiatric emergency.

What Can the Police Do?

  • Check on the welfare of your family member. A well-trained Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) officer can talk to the person who is in distress, work to calm them down and assess whether they are a threat to themselves or others and decide the best response. For those deemed not at risk of self-harm or harming others, police can pull in county crisis workers and/or make referrals to the local mental health navigator.
  • Transport a person who WANTS to go to the hospital. If warranted, police can help convince someone to go to the hospital voluntarily. If the person in crisis does not need an ambulance, police will take the person to the hospital and stay with them during the admission process.
  • Take a person to a hospital for involuntary evaluation. In certain circumstances, police can force a person in crisis to go to the hospital involuntarily for a mental health evaluation. This is known as Chapter 51 of the Wisconsin Statutes, which allows an individual to be detained for an emergency mental health evaluation if they are believed to be a danger to themselves or others.

Did you know?

Several local law enforcement agencies use “co-responder” teams to respond to mental health crisis calls. The Appleton, Neenah and Oshkosh police departments and the Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office all use a co-responder model, which means an officer will respond alongside a mental health professional during calls involving a mental health concern.

Mental health professionals bring expertise in de-escalation techniques and understanding of mental health crises.
